“When I paint, my art becomes all my life, because I get totally involved in every aspect of the entire creative process, from drawing a mental image and sketches of my next creation to signing the painting.
My own realistic style helps me to communicate to the viewer what I feel and what I like as well. The passion I feel for my work drives me to paint my favorite subjects: horses, portraits and everyday scenes.
At the moment I paint almost exclusively with watercolors, I love this media because I like water to be free and at the same time to control it, without any doubt this is magic”.
ABOUT MAURI:
Mauri Virtanen (b.1979) is an Ecuadorian-Finnish figurative artist known internationally for his watercolors of equine and people subjects, since 2017 he is the Representative of IWS (International Watercolor Society) for Ecuador, in 2023 he was appointed as Ambassador of MAA (Mondial Art Academia of France and Canada) for Ecuador and in 2024 he got the appointment of Representative of Urbino in Acquerello of Italy for Ecuador, he is also Associate Member of NWS (National Watercolor Society) and active member of the Union of Painters of Romania.
He paints in some techniques like: oil, acrylics, soft pastels, etc. His works are in private, corporative, university and public collections Worldwide and have been featured in postal stamps of the Vatican City, in covers of some books and in some international media outlets including: IRNA (News Agency of the Islamic Republic of Iran), Valahia Magazine (Romania), IWS Magazine, El Comercio newspaper (Ecuador), Balkan newspaper (Albania), jurnalgiurgiuvean.ro (Romania), kvira.ge (Georgia), TheDesignerMagazine.se (Sweden), among others.
Mauri lives in Quito, the city where he studied architecture, he paints since his childhood, his first personal exhibition was inaugurated in the Palace of the Romanian Parliament in Bucharest in 2001, before that he was recognized with some awards in Ecuador, Romania, Finland and other countries such as the First Place in the International Art Contest organized by Lasten ja Nuorten Taidekeskus institute in Hyvinkää-Finland in 1992, First Place in the International Art Contest for Children and Youth OPEN DOORS that took place in Romania in the editions of the years 1996 and 1998 and the Honorable Mention in the International Art Competition THE ROSE OF LIDICE in Czech Republic in 1998, among others.
Mauri strives to create a conversation between the viewer and his artworks because on them he depicts what he sees, feels and likes as well, his mission is to capture scenes of animals especially horses, people, architecture and scenes of everyday life in a natural setting.
His artworks are an exaltation of the color and shape, of the drawing and composition, of the rhythm and movement, of the unity in the variety and of his animal and human characters as living celebrities.
Since 2015 Mauri paints almost exclusively with watercolors as watercolorist he has won some important international awards such as: Gold Honor Medal 2024 given by the municipality of Lampa-Peru as a prize for his artistic activity, Honorable Mention with his work art art titled: “Heartland” in the International Prizes for Professional Artists 2023 organized by MAA, he was appointed as Special Invited Artist for the exhibition “Muzică şi culoare dincolo de timp” and for the celebrations of the 65th. Anniversary of the School of Art Victor Karpis located in Giurgiu-Romania, his artwork “Rakhsh” was selected as the best one of the top 10 in the International Festival WATERCOLOR WONDERS 2023 arranged by IWS Portugal and IWS Sheida Gallery from Iran.
In 2022 he got the Golden Brush Award in the 7th. International LOVE, PEACE AND TOLERANCE THROUGH ART Watercolor Festival in Izmir-Türkiye, in 2019 he was awarded as Best Watercolor Artist at the 3rd. Tbilisi Watercolor Festival 2019 in Georgia, in 2018 he was appointed as Honorary Citizen of the city of Giurgiu (Romania), First Place in the International Contest of Portraits of Romanian Personalities EMINESCU ŞI CARAGIALE 2016 with his work “Portrait of Nadia Comaneci” this event took place in Romania.
Mauri was given a Honourable Award at the First Prague International Watercolor Festival 2018 in Czech Republic, in the same year he got a Honourable Mention in the Watercolor Festival of November 2018 that took place in Guayaquil-Ecuador, in 2017 he was selected to be part of the exhibition MASTERS OF WATERCOLOR “ELITE 2017” in Tirana – Albania with his work: “The pride of Albania”.
In the years 2016 and 2015 he was finalist of the ART (Art Revolution Taipei) that is well known as the biggest fair and exhibition of contemporary art in Asia that is celebrated every year in Taipei – Taiwan.
